Anthony Scalzo, age 82, passed away peacefully in his home on April 29, 2026 encircled by the love of his closest family members throughout his last week on earth.

Loving husband of Josephine (DeVito) Scalzo for 60 years who with sadness and heartache will forever miss him. Dear beloved Father and best friend of son David Anthony Scalzo and admired father-in-law to David’s spouse Catherine Hida.

Born in Utica, New York Anthony was the son of the late Anthony and Christine (Plescia)Scalzo and brother to recently deceased Ann (Scalzo) Coriale. He is survived by his caring sister Gina, her spouse Chris Contento, his brother-in-law Benny Coriale and several nieces and nephews.  Anthony is also survived by his sister-in-law Angela DeVito and nephew Jay DeVito-H.

Other non family survivors include cherished friends informally known as Jet Set, from LeMoyne College.  Deepest gratitude to their families for the gift of the casket flower display.

Anthony will always and forever love his precious and adored grandchildren David and Sarah for whom he felt blessed to have, as he expressed in a note left for them. His love for both of them was deep and unparalleled in nature as he organized and accompanied both David and Sarah in a multitude of fun events, including dance performances for Sarah and basketball get-togethers with David Anthony l and David  Anthony ll. He taught both grandchildren, when youngsters, how to fish as they rode happily and cheerfully together in a pedal boat in anticipation of seeing fish and frogs in the beautiful pond contiguous to Anthony’s home.  He was also so elated to have the chance to play basketball often with his grandson David.

Education was very important to Anthony.  He attained his B.A. degree from LeMoyne Jesuit College in Syracuse, NY.  He received his M.S., C.A.S., and Ed.D in Educational Administration at the State University of New York at Albany.  Anthony had a notable and memorable career as an educator.  His many positions included: Chair of the Foreign Language Department and teacher at Thomas R. Proctor High School, Utica School District( Sept 1968 – June 1976); Assistant Superintendent for Personnel for Utica City School District(August 1976 – June 1981); Superintendent of Schools for Herrkimer Central School District(July 1981-June 1987); Superintendent of Schools for Ocean City Schol District(June 1987-March 1992); County Superintendent of Schools for Bergen County Office of Education(March 1992-October 1995); Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Paterson Public School District(October 1995-November 1997); Superintendent of Schools for Port Republic School District(November 1997 – January 2000); Principal at St. Mary’s School in Burlington, WI(August 2002-August 2006); Adjunct Professor Ed. Admin at Concordia University(September 2007-2025).   Additionally, he held the position of Adjunct Professor Educational Administration for State University of New York at Cortland and was a consultant for the New York State Dept. of Education.

Anthony also published “Study of Regionalism in Coordinating Area III of the State University of New York”.  Due to his long, exceptional career, he was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award by the Utica City School District, was appointed by Governor James Florio to the New Jersy Juvenile Justice Commission and was recognized by United States Senators William Bradley and Frank Lautenberg for projects to improve school lunches.

Anthony will always be remembered for his unwavering optimism guided to his closest family members even in challenging times.  He lived a life embedded in the Catholic faith, having a firm foundation in Catholic tradition.  May Anthony rest in God’s everlasting peace.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Visitation to be held on Friday, May 22nd, 2026 from 10:30-11:45AM at St. Mary Catholic Community, 9520 W. Forest Home Ave.  Anthony’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life will commence at 12PM on May  22nd at St. Mary Catholic Faith Community.   

In lieu of flowers you could honor Anthony’s legacy by performing a kind deed to a student(K-University level), having a fun event with your grandchildren, and/or by saying a prayer to Saint Marianne Cope.

Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
