Richard Butterworth

Richard Butterworth, age 63, of Franklin, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at his home on April 7, 2024, with his beloved wife, Marlene, by his side.

Born in Chadderton, England, just outside of Oldham, Richard attended The Blue Coat School before embarking on a distinguished career in finance. With a remarkable work ethic, Richard attended Manchester University at 16 years old while working full-time for the post office. He graduated with a charter membership in accountancy (equivalent to an American master’s degree and C.P.A.) – a testament to his dedication and expertise in his field.

In his professional life, Richard was a respected finance executive who used his skills to mentor upcoming finance professionals and entrepreneurs. His guidance helped many within his family and community to achieve their professional goals. Richard’s generosity extended beyond mere advice, as he was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need, developing friendships and finding common ground with everyone he met.

Richard’s life was marked by his deep love for his family and his community. He was a cherished husband to Marlene, with whom he shared a beautiful love story that began 30 years ago. Their friendship blossomed into a partnership filled with mutual respect and devotion. He embraced Marlene’s family as his own, becoming a beloved stepfather to Mark Beyer, Hope Gascoigne (Aaron), Gina DeBell (Jake), Andie Meyers (Jake), and Kathie Klein (Dave). He was a deeply loving grandfather and great-grandfather to Brett, Shelly, Luke, Ryan, Cate, Makenzie, Heath, Vince, Weston, Aiden, Carter, Harley, and Jenson.

A lifelong football (soccer) enthusiast, Richard grew up cheering for Oldham Athletic A.F.C. and enjoyed many camping adventures with his Boy Scout troop. His childhood pastimes evolved into adulthood as he was an avid reader, particularly of disaster recovery and survival fiction, and enjoyed listening to old-time radio. Richard’s free time often found him deeply engaged in board games or crafting epic treasure hunts for his grandchildren, creating joyful memories that will be cherished forever.

Richard is preceded in death by his loving parents, Robert (Bob) and Doreen Butterworth, and stepson Mark Beyer. He leaves behind his beloved cats, Lexi and Chloe, who were constant companions in his office as he “tinkered” on his computer.

A man of immense kindness and caring, Richard is remembered for his quiet strength and the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Until we meet again.

No public services are scheduled at this time.

Marlene, my name is Terri and I worked with Richard at the Journal Sentinel. He made such an impression on me. He was so kind and thoughtful. I enjoyed my conversations with Richard as he told me about you and all the kids. He was so proud of you. He just beamed when he spoke of all of you. I am so sad to hear this news. I feel very sad for you. Blessings to all.

Richard was one of my favorites here at Telkonet. He was always an advocate of logical and critical thinking skills which I appreciated, and made us get along great. I was saddened when he was training his replacement here. But does not compare, and this makes me even more sorry for your loss, I’m sure he was even greater outside of work.

Richard was so easy to talk to and genuine and so nice to me always. I will keep you and your family in my prayers and only peace is knowing dad now has a true friend and favorite of his there in the Kingdom with him.
