Pauline Sawatske (nee Mills)

11/7/1927- 6/5/2026

In the fall of 1927 Pauline was born in the small rural town of Turin, Michigan in the UP to Max and Winogene Mills. She was the 7th girl in the family 8. Their brother was the youngest. After graduating from Graveraet High School, she headed for Milwaukee and secured a position with an insurance firm. Pauline met Arnie at a post WWII dance hall on WI Avenue. They married on July 7th, 1951. Soon, three children (Susan, Daniel and Stephen) joined the family. When all the children were engaged with classes, Pauline returned to the workforce and became a school secretary for Milwaukee Public Schools. During this time, they acquired lake frontage in Vilas County on Horsehead Lake. Who knew then that they would choose to retire there for 3o years!

Pauline was a grandmother to Dan’s 4 kids (Laurie Fischer) Joseph, Katie, Thomas and David, while Steve’s has 4 kids also – Cynthia, Allyson, Rebecca and Philip. Great grandchildren from grandson Joe’s 2 are (Johanna Barnstorf), Lily and Griffin. Great grand daughters are Emilia and Clara when counting Katie’s (George Iarca) kids.

Often at 4 p.m. Pauline would play hymns on the piano. She was active in the church choir and taught Sunday School. Pauline enjoyed traveling and would never say no to a trip. Not to be forgotten, she was an avid card player and would play any game at the drop of a hat and was often caught doing the newspaper crossword puzzles. There was always a song, a little dance, and a big dimpled smile.

A prayer service will take place for Pauline on Friday, June 19th, at Arlington Park Cemetery (4141 S 27th St, Greenfield, WI 53221).  The prayer service will start promptly at 12/noon.
