Mary was always, always, always a joy to be around. She aslo became one of my first friends when I moved to Milwaukee, several years after she became Winnie’s friend. Mary welcomed me to her neighborhood of friend, for which I will always be grateful. I so miss hanging out with her and feeling her richness of spirit. She reached so far and wide, to me, in the depth of her spirituality that I was not surprised when she embraced the Baptist crowd. It is a comfort to me that Mary and my mother, also named Mary, are meeting for the first time right now. Mary Rose…I will miss you.

Mary became one of my first friends when I moved to Milwaukee 20 years ago. She was an immediate instigator for me to join her in all manner of exploring her city, from the parks to the museums to summer festivals to Saturdays on the bike trails. Mary knew downtown like her own back yard so she became my navigator for years whenever I had to drive to or through that only spot where I was still getting lost. I have the impression that Mary was a navigator for many people in many spots of their lives…I will miss our debates and discussions, her love of art and music, her pleasure in the simplicity of a beautiful day and of loud teasing among friends around a backyard or camp fire. Mary was kind and thoughtful, serious and focused, fun-loving and professional. She stood up for her beliefs and her values and for the past nine years, she fought for her life. Now she will have an eternal life… Mary Rose Helminski was well loved by friends like me and she will be remembered.
