    Mary J. Eckel

Mary J. Eckel, affectionately known to many as “MareBear,” passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 11, 2026, at the age of 77. She was born on November 12, 1948.

Mary was the devoted wife of Richard C. “Rich” Eckel, with whom she shared a loving marriage for over 47 years. She was a fun-loving mother, a caring grandmother, and someone who treasured every opportunity to spend time with her family and friends.

A true social butterfly, Mary valued the many friendships she formed throughout her life, including those from her years working at the bank and the connections she made while serving as an ambassador for the Chamber. Connecting with childhood friends and socializing with her Holy Angels group was time she cherished.  Her loving nature, sense of humor, and joyful spirit made people smile wherever she went.

Mary was once an avid reader and loved spending time traveling and taking road trips, especially to Florida beaches. She also created countless family memories in her backyard pool, where generations gathered to swim, laugh, and enjoy time together. She and Rich loved taking rides in their convertible, often stopping at their favorite local restaurants along the way.

Holidays held a special place in Mary’s heart. She always made sure there were more presents than necessary under the Christmas tree, and each year the children eagerly wondered what the annual matching Christmas gift would be. There was also sure to be a gag gift that brought laughter to everyone. Another favorite tradition was attending washer tournaments with family on the Fourth of July.

Mary loved taking pictures when she was with family and was famous for asking everyone to make a “funny face” for the camera. She was a devoted grandmother who made time to attend her grandchildren’s activities. Although she did not particularly enjoy shopping, she always seemed to find the very best deals whenever she went – some may have called her “thrifty”.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Jeannette Haubrich (Huck) and Charles Haubrich.  She is survived by her loving husband, Richard C. Eckel; her children, Donavan Theno and his children, Cassandra, Jonny, Lilly, and Cloey; Robyn Gruner (Theno), her husband, Arthur Gruner, and their children, Drew and Gracie; Christopher Eckel, his wife, Emily Eckel (Baron), and their children, Caleb and Maddie; Andrea Sirotinski (Eckel), her husband, Stanley Sirotinski, and their children, Ava and Max; and Nicholas Eckel. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Borman, and Joan’s four daughters (Jenny, Joyce, Julie, Jeanne) and their families, along with many other relatives and dear friends.

Mary will be remembered for her loving and caring heart, her laughter, and the happiness she brought to those around her. Her family will forever cherish the many traditions, adventures, photographs, funny faces, pool days, holidays, and treasured memories she created.
