David John Ulma
David J. Ulma, a devoted family man and beloved friend, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on November 8, 1943, David lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and an enduring love for his family. He was a veteran of the United States Army and spent many years as a supervisor at Briggs & Stratton.
David’s true legacy lies within his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy (nee Magrecke), and his cherished daughter, DeeAnn Kraus. He was a doting grandfather to Cassidy Weyers and Kelsie Kraus, and he took immense joy in welcoming his two great-grandchildren, Elena and Damien, into the world. With his gentle presence and unwavering support, he made sure each member of his family felt cherished and valued.
David is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Theodora (nee Switalski) Ulma and his siblings Henry (Mae Rita), Jane (Joe) Czajkowski, Dorothy (Casey) Steck, Bobby, Jerry (Pat), Grace (Herbie) Koepsel and Pat (Sylvester) Lewandowski. Also preceded in death by his in-laws, Joseph and Helen Magrecke.
A man of quiet strength and creativity, David was known for his phenomenal cooking, especially his legendary cheesecake that brought joy to family gatherings. He had an unparalleled talent for crafting and woodworking, building everything from doll furniture for his granddaughters to building a little free library for DeeAnn – a gift that supported one of her greatest passions and stood as his way of quietly cheering her on. His attentiveness extended to never missing the chance to send a greeting card for every occasion, making each family member feel significant and remembered.
A man of many interests, David cherished moments spent brewing wine and beer, often sharing his creations with family and friends. He found joy in the thrill of snowmobiling and the camaraderie that came with spending Sunday afternoons watching the Green Bay Packers. His infectious spirit and love of life brought warmth to all who knew him.
David’s impact on those around him was profound yet subtle. He exemplified constancy, kindness, and reliability, characteristics that will forever resonate in the hearts of his loved ones.
The family will celebrate David’s life with a funeral service at Heritage Funeral Home (4800 S. 84th St. Greenfield) on September 10, 2025, at 1:00 PM. Prior to the service, there will be a visitation held at the same location beginning at 11:00 AM. Following the service, David will be laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
As we gather to honor the life of David John Ulma, we invite all who knew him to join us in remembering a man who exemplified love, dedication, and the magic of everyday moments.
David was an avid card sender and kept Hallmark in business. Please feel free to bring a card to send off with him to his final resting place.
Godspeed David!! I’ll miss seeing you at Metro Market!!
David was not just a uncle he was like a brother,he built my first bicycle out of spare parts. He helped me buy my first car and drove it home because I was too young to drive. He taught me how to drive a stick shift car,God I will miss him.
God bless you, dear cousin. Although we lived not far from each other, we didn’t visit but we talked on the phone quite a bit, checking to see what was going on in each others lives. Occasionally we ran into each other at the grocery store and would visit ,like forever!
Will miss our talks! Luv u!!! 🙏🏻
I’m very blessed to have grown up with Uncle David. He was only 10 years old when I was born, so he was just David, not Uncle David.
He was like a big brother who throughout my life was loving and supportive.. He made me laugh, smile and even made me a birthday cake once!
When I moved to Florida he called on a regular basis, just to say Hi, or check on our weather (especially during Hurricane season).
I’m sure going to miss those “how’s your weather?” phone calls!
Rest in peace, “just” David!
