Cheryl Conner

Immersed in love by cherished family near and far, Cheryl Conner, née Barnes, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2024 after a sudden illness. True to form, her exit was abrupt but graceful, leaving everyone wanting more: More unmitigated laughter. More fierce loyalty. More potato salad. More time.

Born on March 3, 1958 to Keith and Barbara Barnes, Cheryl grew up in the town of Raymond with her 5 siblings, Charles; Charlene (Hack); Christine (Dixon); Carolyn (Van Sloten); and Craig. She attended Union Grove High School and graduated from Gateway Technical College as a Medical Assistant, having proudly phlebotomized many key members of the ’82 Brew Crew. Cheryl lived a life of service to others, whether as a homemaker, personal caregiver, church secretary, or stalwart friend.

She truly loved the life she built in Racine with her husband of 37 years Casey; their children Matthew and Elizabeth (Vazquez); son-in-law Erik; and mutually beloved granddaughters Lola and Avery. Both in proximity and kinship, she was particularly close to her sister Carolyn, with whom she would team up at the slightest provocation to throw family gatherings replete with games, decorations, and lavish buffets. Their exploits will remain legendary and their deep appreciation of one another beyond words.

The ultimate road trip partner, Cheryl always knew the best route to take and the best snacks to bring. Tootsie Pops were paramount, which she delighted in offering freely to tollbooth operators along the way with one terse word: “Tootsie?” If she loved you, which she probably did, she would share her remarkable talents with you, often manifest in fresh garden veggies or homemade culinary delights. This was never more evident than on Christmas Eve, wherein she was careful to prepare everybody’s favorite everything, resulting in veritable mountains of expertly baked cookies, candies, bars, peanut brittle, and her incredible caramel corn. She loved us indeed.

Cheryl was a woman of sincere faith who preferred a life of simple country charm. She often related fond memories of visiting craft fairs and enjoying weekends in Door County with her dear mother-in-Law Pat, as well as her treasured times with Casey in St. Germain. She was a lifelong devotee of the Racine County Fair and could always be counted on to get up before sunrise to stake out the most ideal vantage point for the Racine 4th of July parade. It was important for her to be on time for any fireworks display; and equally important that there be sparklers and Bomb Pops to round out the celebration, which she would annually supply. A voracious reader and nature enthusiast with a soft spot for deer, mountains, waterfalls, and stray cats, she never wasted an opportunity to laugh heartily, pray faithfully, and stand in awe of God’s creation.A special thanks from the family to Cheryl’s niece Hannah, whom she considered a 2nd daughter, for so sweetly and expertly mediating between medical staff and family. Cheryl is further survived by her Uncle Bill; Aunts Alene, Barbara and Joan; myriad in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews; and a close circle of friends, all of whom she treasured, prayed faithfully for, and blessed immeasurably with rare kindness and humor. Visitation will be on Saturday, July 6 from 3-4p at Harbor Rock Tabernacle (5607 Wright Ave. Racine, WI 53406) immediately followed by a brief Memorial Service. What an incredible tribute to her you have written. Any woman who lived a life described above was loved fiercely and loved all of her family and friends with all of her heart.

I knew Cheryl for decades — she was my sister and brother-in-law’s sister-in-law. I saw her often at family events, and she was always kind and friendly. After my dad died, I tagged along with my sister and brother-in-law for holiday celebrations on the Conner side of the family. When Cheryl hosted, she always made me feel very welcome and part of the family. She was a lovely person and will be truly missed.
