Jenifer “Jenie” Mae Schmidt
Our dear sister Jenie went to be with Jesus on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the age of 66. Jenie was the loving daughter of the late Melvin and Glendean Schmidt and the oldest of six children. She cherished her family deeply, and being together with them was one of the great joys of her life. Schmidt parties were always filled with fun, laughter and silliness and her silly songs and joyful spirit have always been an integral part of the family. Her joyful personality was woven into the fabric of her family, and those memories will remain with them forever.
She will be deeply missed by her siblings, Jill (Richard) Rekowski, Penny (Alan) Flater, Deana (Orion) Assante, Ty (Liz) Schmidt, and Douglas (Sonsheree) Schmidt.
Jenie was also a beloved aunt to Craig (Erin) Rekowski, Brandon (Kyle Cornelius) Rekowski, Amy (Isaac) Klahn, Brittney Will, Allison (Jason) McKelvey, Alexander (Gabriella) Flater, Maxx (Keanna) Schmidt, Abigail (Aaron) Heidersheid, Timothy (Ashley) Flater, Miki (Tony) Martello, Elizabeth (Josh) Nickels, Noah Schmidt, Rebekah Flater, Tori (Ryan) Buss, Sarah Flater, and Lucas Schmidt.
Her role as a great-aunt was one she treasured. She was devoted to Rylie, Hannah, Madison, Colton & Daxton Rekowski; Jolene & Warren Will; Caleb, Nathan, Lydia, Hannah, Peter & Esther Klahn; Savanna, Connor & Beckett McKelvey; Winston, Titus, Juliet & Estella Flater; Naomi Heidersheid; Nicolas & Jeremy Flater; Miles, Blair & Josie Schmidt; Vinny & Emmy Martello; (plus 3 more on the way).
Jenie was also a niece to the late Karen Sanderson, the late Terry Schmidt, Monna VanDale, and Paul Schmidt (the late Jana). She is further survived by her cousins, other relatives, and many friends who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Jenie graduated from West Allis Central High School with the Class of 1978 and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1983. She worked for many years at West Allis Savings Bank before spending approximately ten years with Knight Berry Title. After a lifetime of work and service, she retired in July 2024.
Jenie had a creative heart and loved making things for the people she cared about. She was an avid and incredible cake decorator and a talented card maker, often creating personalized Valentine’s cards for family and friends. She also enjoyed making personal Christmas ornaments. These thoughtful creations were another reflection of the way Jenie loved people. She put time, care, and a little bit of herself into the things she made for others.
Children held a particularly special place in Jenie’s heart. She loved babysitting, especially her great-nieces and great-nephews, and she had a natural ability to make children feel welcomed, cared for, and loved. She was a favorite AWANA leader in both Sparks and Chums, where she poured that love into the next generation.
Jenie’s faith was at the center of her life. In 1997, she gave her life to Jesus and became a beloved and active member of New Hope, Fair Park and later CrossPoint Church. She had a huge heart for children and loved to sing. Her voice became a familiar and cherished part of the Sunday mornings she was on Worship Team. For Jenie, her faith was not simply something she believed; it was something she lived and shared with the people around her.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 21st, from 4-6pm at CrossPoint Church (11000 W Oklahoma Ave, West Allis). A Celebration of Life for Jenie will begin at 6pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jenie’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
