Theodore James Tyrrell
“Ted”

Theodore J. “Ted” Tyrrell, age 73, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was the longtime partner of Donald Smith and beloved son of Elsie (nee Chrudimsky) and the late Ted Tyrrell. Ted took pride in being the eldest of four boys and was the dear brother of John (Susan nee Ziegler), the late Tom (Mary nee McNutt), and the late Jim. He was a cherished uncle to Tamara Mell (Chris), Christopher (Jessica Orlofske), Sarah (fiancé Adam Sobieralski), Margaret, and Robert Tyrrell, and he was further survived by other relatives and friends.

Ted was born in Milwaukee on December 13, 1950. He spent his early years on Layton Avenue in Greenfield and later moved with his family to Woods Road in Franklin when he was about 14 years old.

He graduated from Franklin High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from U.W. Milwaukee and his Master’s Degree in Education from Cardinal Stritch University. Ted dedicated over 34 years to Milwaukee Public Schools, serving as an elementary school teacher, a principal, and the Head of the Learning Disabilities Department. Towards the end of his career, he specialized as a Learning Diagnostician and also taught Drivers Education for over 20 years in Milwaukee and Wauwatosa School Districts.

Ted’s love for travel took him across the United States and Europe, and he cherished spending time at both his parents’ cabin and his brother Tom’s family cottage, enjoying the lake with loved ones.

Cooking was one of Ted’s passions, and he was known for hosting family gatherings and holidays. He always made sure to have chocolate milk for his nieces and nephews during these events.

During summers and falls, Ted delighted in attending local church picnics like St. Mary’s Church Picnic, the Strawberry Festival in Cedarburg, and Festa Italiana, along with various arts and antique shows. He was an avid collector of antiques and art, which he proudly displayed in his home.

Ted was fortunate to retire early and became a snowbird, dividing his time between Florida and Wisconsin. In Florida, he enjoyed monitoring the weather in Wisconsin and sharing updates with family and friends, and spending time at the beach.

Ted was a parishioner of St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church. He volunteered his time and talents at St. Greg’s St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry for more than 8 years. Ted was so dedicated that even while wintering in Florida, he would still be involved by making phone calls and doing other tasks.

There simply aren’t any words a person could offer to ease someone’s pain in the midst of loss. Ted and his family are and will always be part of the memories I hold in my heart of time spent with them. In time, peace will come; but that will, obviously, take some time to find its way to all of you. I hope your sadness will give way to happy memories and happier times.
