Susan Ruth Robertson passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on April 29th, 2015 at her home in River Hills, WI. She was born on July 7, 1952, in Mount Kisco, New York to Drs. Douglas and Ruth Geissinger Robertson as the youngest of four children (behind Jamie, Edie, and Jean). She graduated from Rippowam School in 1967 and Rosemary Hall (Greenwich, Connecticut ) in 1970. That year she began her studies at University of Chicago where she met her future husband of nearly forty years, John Machulak. After graduating with honors in 1974, she went on to earn her law degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with distinction (Order of the Coif). They settled in Milwaukee and had three children, James, Erica and John, who they raised and one stillborn, Anna.
After graduating from law school, Susan served as a law clerk to the Honorable John W. Reynolds (United States District Court) and then joined the firm of Michael Best & Friedrich. In 1988, she joined her husband’s law practice, which became Machulak, Robertson & Sodos. Susan and John worked together for over 25 years, until Susan was disabled by a malignant brain tumor.
In addition to her practice, Susan was active in her children’s school parent associations and nonprofits serving low income and mentally disabled individuals, was a host mother to foreign-exchange students from Colombia (Maria), Chile (Gabriel), Norway (JT), Egypt (Ali) and Russia (Denis), and volunteered as a literacy teacher. She leaves behind her beloved husband John Machulak, her children James (Amanda Makulec) Machulak, Erica Machulak, and John Machulak, and countless other cherished friends and relatives.
