Sú Thị Quan

Sú Thị Quan of Brookfield passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 30, 2024, at the age of 90.

Loving mother of Hai (Edna), Long, Nguyen (Mabel Wong), Tai (Dong), Lien, Lan, Phung (Bao Tran) and Toan. Proud grandmother of Calvin (Hailey Smith) and Vienna Lee; Ashton and Jayden Lee; Tri Nicholas Nguyen; Alvin, Adalina and MaiLan; and Tyler, Preston and Grace Tran.

Sú was born in Vĩnh Long, Vietnam, on November 23, 1933, to Ɖức Quan and Liễu Lý, who had emigrated from China. In 1978, Sú, her husband, Tô Lý, her children and mother-in-law fled Vietnam to seek a better future for their family. After six months in a refugee camp in Indonesia, they were resettled by Catholic Social Services of Milwaukee and sponsored by St. Pius X Parish in Wauwatosa, making Milwaukee their new home in June 1979.

As they started their new life in a duplex in Milwaukee, their children were just starting high school, middle school and elementary school. With so many to care for in a household of 11, Sú pitched in to help support the family in any way she could. She handmade and meticulously hand-painted barrettes, hair clips and baby bottles, and she babysat the children of many family friends over the years.

She loved to travel the world, venturing to destinations including China, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Thailand and Cambodia. She was an active member of her local Buddhist temple, where she made lifelong friends and where she dedicated her time cooking for members, lunch for Sunday service, fundraisers and festivities. Sú was a consummate cook – making Vietnamese egg rolls, canh chua (Vietnamese sweet and sour soup), bánh xèo (sizzling crepes) and many other dishes so delicious that they rivaled what is served in restaurants. She passed along her skills and recipes to the next generation, continuing her legacy.

Her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren, whom she enjoyed tending to and spoiling. Raising her family with loving care, dedication and guidance was her greatest achievement. She was immensely proud that her children, and their children, have gone on to lead successful lives – making the difficult journey to America worth the sacrifice. We love you so much, Mom and Grandma, and we will miss your smile, humor, kind heart, wisdom and, simply, your company.

Sú was preceded in death by her husband, Tô Lý, and her sister, Ngoc Quan.

Services will be held at Heritage Funeral Home – New Berlin Chapel, 16880 W. National Avenue, New Berlin 53151. On Saturday, April 13, 2024, a Buddhist ceremony will be from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and a Buddhist farewell ceremony will be from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Mrs. Ly is my mother-in-law. By habit, I still refer to her as Mrs. Ly because that’s what my family called her long before I married into the Ly family. My mother-in-law was a kind, gentle soul who taught her children to be good, decent people. For that, I will be eternally grateful because my husband, her son, is equally kind, caring, respectful and giving. What a magnificent legacy. My heart aches for him and the rest of the Ly/Lee family for their immeasurable loss. Rest in peace, dear Mrs. Ly, Mom. I love you, and I will miss you until we meet again.

Aunty Ly has always been such a kind, sweet family friend. She’s always welcome my family & I every time we visit. Being a true Asian person, always feeding me when i visit. Being an amazing cook, the taste of her food makes me feel at home away from home. May your kind soul rest in peace, until we meet again.. we will be definitely miss you & your lovely smile.

We have known Mrs. Ly and her family since before we were married in 1980. We can remember that before our own children (we now have grandchildren) some of the younger Ly children would visit for an evening of fun on New Years Eve. We also remember the tasty grilled meats that were always a staple of an occasional barbeque. Mr. and Mrs. Ly sacrificed much to give their children an opportunity at a better way of life and for that we say mission accomplished!
