It was a privilege to be friends with Paul during the time he was living in California around the late 1980’s. Over the years we had lost contact, but had recently regained it and spoke on the telephone a few times , the last time I spoke with Paul was November 2020.
Paul was an honest, unpretentious, and trustworthy friend. Despite Paul’s modest demeanour he was actually adventurous, daring and open to new experiences. I remember more than once us happening upon a high school track and we could not resist foot racing , always once around the track, always in street close because it was never planned, and always a photo finish. We also backpacked into the Sierra Nevada Mountains several times with other friends, shared an interest in history and beer drinking, and generally had many laughs.
As we know Paul was faced with physical challenges throughout his life, but I never remembered him to despair, or place blame; instead he was always imagining his next adventure.
I was glad for Paul when I heard that he had met Cindy and married after returning to Wisconsin ; and had the pleasure of meeting them together when they visited California.
My sincere condolences to Cindy, Paul’s surviving family and friends, he will be missed.
