Mary Jo Liegler

Mary Jo Liegler of Franklin passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, at the age of 85. She is survived by her partner Kevin O’Donnell; her sisters Barbara Lyle and Kathy Rodgers; her five sons Fred Van Remortel, Joe (Caroline) Van Remortel, Peter (Rachael) Van Remortel, Paul Van Remortel and Nicholas (Erin) Van Remortel; eleven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents Gerald and Marion Liegler, and brother Donald (Rose) Liegler.

Mary Jo grew up in Racine and graduated from St. Catherine’s High School and Marquette University. She was on girls’ basketball team and was a State Champion in Debate while at St. Catherine’s. She also received a master’s degree in education from Western Michigan. Mary Jo lived in the Denver, Colorado area for many years before returning to the Milwaukee area.

Mary Jo was an avid hiker and sailor. More than Kevin’s partner of almost 30 years, she was first mate on the sailboat “Idle Hands” as they sailed four of the five Great Lakes, visiting every port on Lake Michigan and most in Lakes Huron and Superior. She also enjoyed their annual hiking adventures throughout the Southwest, California and Europe.

A celebration of life will be held at time and location to be determined.
