Luz Esmeralda Herrera (Lucy)
Born to Earthly Life: November 5, 1973
Born to Eternal Life: August 24, 2025
Luz Esmeralda Herrera passed away on August 24, 2025, at 11:40 p.m. after a courageous 23-month battle with brain cancer. She entered eternal life at the age of 51, surrounded by love and held in the hearts of many.
She is survived by her beloved partner of 8 years, Saul Astroga-Acosta; her devoted children Jacob Quiñones, Isidro Paz (Annalise Paz), and Joshua Ruiz; her cherished grandchildren Liam Paz, Mateo Paz, and those yet to come; and her Godchild, Miriam Nataly Meza, whom she lovingly guided in spirit. She also leaves behind her dear furbabies, Bonbon Herrera and Manchitas Herrera.
Luz earned her GED from Triton Community College and then relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 2005, where she built a loving home and community. She worked for Milwaukee Public Schools before taking on a long-term role at Advocate Aurora Health Care, where she served for over 15 years as a Reception Lead. Her compassion and advocacy, particularly for Spanish-speaking patients navigating language barriers, made an everlasting impact on countless lives.
Known for her radiant spirit, Luz lit up every room she entered. Her kindness, and signature sass brought smiles and comfort to coworkers, patients, friends, and family. Her joy and laughter always made it seem like the world was stopped and we could focus on the smaller things in life.
A fiercely proud and loving mother, Luz raised three incredible sons—often doing so alone. She embraced both motherhood and fatherhood with grace and strength, providing nurture, structure, and unwavering support. Her love for her children was her greatest pride, and she celebrated their successes loudly and often.
With Saul, Luz found a true and enduring love. He brought her peace (and occasional headaches, which she fondly loved). She treasured the life they built together, and deeply appreciated the role he played as a stepfather and grandfather. He was not only loved by Luz, but also by her Step-children and grandchildren.
Even through the most difficult times of her illness, Luz remained strong and vibrant. Though she missed work and her independence, she continued to find joy in family gatherings, holidays, and birthdays—including her 50th and 51st—which she celebrated with deep gratitude.
Though we grieve her passing, we are forever grateful for the memories she gave us. Luz Esmeralda Herrera was a guiding light, and her legacy of love, laughter, strength, and magic will remain in our hearts forever.
Rest in peace, Esmeralda. You are deeply loved and missed.
