Lucy (Szymczak) Smerlinski “Smerl”
Lucy Rose (Szymczak) Smerlinski, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, entered into eternal life on Sunday, December 29 at the age of 96 at St. Camillus in Milwaukee. She dedicated her life to her family, and her caring spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The youngest of eight children, Lucy was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters, as well as her beloved husband Frank (Francis). We take comfort in knowing she and her “sweetie pie” will finally be reunited.
Loving mother to Jan (the late Chuck) Peterson, Judy (Charlie) Owens, Joni (Scott Haines) Kostecki, Mary Jo (Jeff) Welnak, Mark (Renee) Smerlinski, and Marlene (Robert) Fieldbinder. Adoring grandmother to Kris (Don), Andrea (Brian), Scott, Shelly (Matt), the late Angela (Ryan), David, Brian, Kelly (Joe), Denise (Luis), Bethany (Dennis), Becki (Matt), Lauren (Kurt), Danielle (Jonah), Ryan, Ross, and Alie. Great-grandma to more than 20.
Known as the family documentarian and photographer, Lucy will also be remembered for her love of children (especially the babies), gardening, bird watching, cooking, crocheting, traveling, casino trips, card playing, shopping, jazz crooners, Kopp’s frozen custard, and Polish traditions. The Smerlinskis were long-time parishioners at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Milwaukee.
Visitation will take place on Friday, March 21 from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Guardian Angel Chapel in the East Residence of St. Camillus, 10100 W. Bluemound Rd. in Wauwatosa, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. A private interment will follow at Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, where Lucy will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Lucy’s name be made to St. Camillus Foundation, Inc., 10200 W. Bluemound Rd., Wauwatosa, Wi 53226, or the Alzheimer’s Association WI chapter.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves memories no one can steal. Lucy raised a wonderful family with Frank as evidenced with our good friends Judy & Charlie Owens.
What a beautiful tribute. She raised a remarkable family. Condolences to you all.
What a wonderful neighbor mom as I grew up in the same neighborhood. She lived a wonderful life, Mrs. Smerlinski will be missed. Condolences to the whole Smerlinski Family.

Dave Grams, Executive Director
My sincerest condolences to the Smerlinski Family. Janet, Judy and Joni – it’s been many years, but I have fond memories of your parents and your family. All the years at Blessed Sacrament and Pius High School. I remember your Dad driving us to the bus on 68th Street – one dedicated to take us to PiHi and I still think of your family every time I go past your home on Howard Avenue. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. May good memories of your Mom, the love of family and friends and the passage of time ease the pain of loss that you are feeling at this moment. God’s Blessings!
