Hunter

  • Memorial Service will be held on Saturday January 21, 2023, at CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1821 N. 16th St. Milwaukee at 1pm.

Johnson B. Hunter, Jr. entered his earthly life on September 14, 1946.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnson B. Hunter, Sr. and Willie Mae (Hill) Hunter; brother Ulysses Hunter; sister Sheila (Guy) Finger.  He is survived by his wife Judi; daughter Dr. Kellie (Will) Campbell; grandsons Evan, Liam, and Duncan Campbell; brother Billy (Nelda) Hunter, Larry (Marion) Hunter, Michael Hunter; sister Robin Anderson; several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

After graduating from Lincolnton (North Carolina) Public School, Johnson attended Winston-Salem State College (now University), earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.  In 1973, he received a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati.

Johnson began his teaching career in the Cincinnati Public School system focusing in Special Education.   In 1974, he relocated to Wisconsin and worked in vocational education at the Southern Center for the Developmentally Disabled.  He concluded his teaching career in the Milwaukee Public School system where he taught Special Education as well as served as a Mentor Teacher.

Upon moving to Wisconsin, Johnson and his family became members of Cross Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.  He was an active member of the congregation for over 30 years serving as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and chair of the Trustee Committee for several decades.  His dedication to the care and upkeep of the church property was a blessing to the congregation.

Johnson found time to engage in many hobbies including gardening, woodworking, stained glass design, and, after retirement, antiquing.  He served on the board of directors for TransCenter for Youth in Milwaukee for several years.

When health issues became a challenge, Johnson was limited in his activities, a source of frustration for him.  In his last months of life, he frequently commented that he wanted to go “home”.  God granted his request on November 21, 2022 when he peacefully began his eternal life.

Donations in memory of Johnson may be made to the American Kidney Association,  Cross Church Building Fund, and the Wisconsin Parkinson Association.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 21, 2023, at CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1821 N. 16th St. Milwaukee at 1pm.
