Jeanne Wierks Birch

Jeanne Wierks Birch, 96, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at St John’s on the Lake, where she lived for 14 years. Jeanne was a lifelong resident of Milwaukee. She was born on March 20, 1930, and raised in Shorewood. She graduated from Downer College, Milwaukee, where she majored in Home Economics and Chemistry. Jeanne put her education to good use in caring for her family. She was devoted to her children and their offspring, to her many friends, and to her church. She loved to sing and play the piano and sang in the church choir, served on the Altar Guild and was the first female Warden of the Vestry at Christ Church, Milwaukee. In addition to her church activities, Jeanne was a substitute teacher at Nicolet High School and a volunteer in literacy programs. She enjoyed baking, sewing and needlework, gardening, reading and writing poetry. Jeanne loved to follow politics and stir up lively debates with whoever would cooperate.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Thomas Merrill Birch. She is survived by her children, Tom (Amita), Betsy (Ken), and Jane (Chris), and in addition, 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Her younger sister, Marianne Van Eenenaam resides in Grand Haven, Michigan.
