Benthien, Howard G.

83, of New Berlin, died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in the loving home of his daughter, Kim, and his son-in-law Don Beasley, in Terre Haute, Indiana, following a long struggle with lung cancer and multiple sclerosis. Born October 7, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, son of Fred and Rose nee Faber Benthien. Dedicated husband of 50 years of Muriel nee Gosseck Benthien, who Howard lovingly cared for through her long illness until her death in 2002. Father of Randy Carolyn of Goffstown, NH, Karen Bob Kammer of Rockford, IL, Kim Diane Don Beasley of Terre Haute, IN, and Ross Nancy of Houston, TX. Grandfather of Josh Kate, Jessie David, Jordan, Aaron Michel, Colin, Morgan and Kelly. Preceeded in death by infant children, Kim Marie and Kevin; parents, Fred and Rose Benthien; and sister, Betty Lieber.
Howard graduated from Washington High School in 1944 and served as a Quartermaster and Signalman in the U.S. Navy during WWII. His ship, the John Q. Roberts, a destroyer escort, was part of the US Naval presence in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the peace treaty with Japan in 1945. Howard worked as an industrial painter for Allis Chalmers in West Allis until he retired in 1982. His interests included gardening, winemaking, going to the movies, playing chess, reading, cooking, and eating good food. Traveling and camping with family and friends were important throughout his life. Howard was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 47 years and a member of the West Allis Retired Men’s Club. He enjoyed people and was blessed with many wonderful friends. Despite his medical circumstances, he exhibited an accepting, upbeat attitude, of quiet strength and humility to the very end. The family is grateful to Hospice of the Wabash Valley for their care and compassion. Funeral service 11 A.M. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 11709 W. Cleveland Ave., West Allis. Visitation at the church Monday, 6-8:30 P.M. and Tuesday 9-11 A.M. Memorials to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church are appreciated.
