Dr. James Edward Funke
Dr. James Edward Funke, beloved son of Walter Herman Funke and Elva Delia Brekke; husband, father, grandfather of ten grandchildren; dentist; and friend, passed away on May 3, 2026, at the age of 79. He passed peacefully in the arms of his pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Naples—a moment that beautifully reflected the faith, grace, and love that guided his life.
Dr. Funke will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 52 years, Mary; his children, David (Trisha), Laura (Trent) Loftin, and Kara (Vinny) Polito; and his ten adored grandchildren, Maddy, Logan, James, Pippa, Raleigh, Gia, James, Angelo, Maryanne, and Victor, who all brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister, Karen (née Funke) (Ron) Hayward, and his faithful dog, Cookie, who was a constant companion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Walter and Elva Funke; his brother, Dr. Frederick Funke; and his sister, Sandra (née Funke) Westphal.
Dr. Funke was one of the kindest and gentlest souls anyone could ever know. Quiet in strength and steady in faith, he carried himself with humility, compassion, and peace. He had a calming presence that made people feel safe, welcomed, and cared for. Whether through a soft word, a helping hand, a laminated newspaper clipping, or simply his presence, he reflected goodness in everyday life.
He was born on June 10, 1946, and raised in West Milwaukee. He graduated from West Milwaukee High School and went on to graduate from Marquette Dental School in 1974.
A beloved dentist and devoted member of his community, Dr. Funke spent his life putting others before himself. He cared for generations of families with patience, kindness, and genuine concern, never seeking recognition and always giving more than was expected. To many, he was more than a dentist, he was a trusted friend, a steady source of comfort, and a person who truly listened. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball, playing tennis, watching sports, spending time with family, and taking trips to Disney World.
Dr. Funke loved deeply and lived simply. He was married to his wonderful wife, Mary, for 52 years. He treasured his family above all else and found the most joy in his grandchildren and all his dogs, especially Cookie. He will be remembered for his gentle heart, quiet wisdom, patience, and unwavering love for those around him.
Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the gift of his life and the example he set for all who knew him. His kindness and peaceful spirit will continue to live on in the lives he touched.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, May 22nd, at Heritage Funeral Home (16880 W. National Ave. New Berlin, WI) with a visitation from 10-12pm followed by a service and burial at Arlington Park Cemetery, Milwaukee.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The American Heart Association, Faith Lutheran Church (4150 Goodlette-Frank Rd, Naples, FL 34103) or St. Matthews (1650 Brown Street Oconomowoc, WI 53066), or a charity of your choice.
