This is what I tried to say at gma’s funeral…but never quite got out. Love, Jess

So, I was told that gma asked me to speak at her funeral. I honestly have no idea why because speaking is definitely not my strong suit. Like her, I was not blessed with the “gift of gab” as she calls it. I am not quite sure what she wanted me to say, but I will do my best and try tell you what I love most about her.
I’ll start with the simple things.
She made the best scrambled eggs I have ever tasted in my life. She taught me how to make them, along with her apple pie and her famous holiday cut out cookies….unfortunately my attempts to make them could never come close to the original.
She loved to stay up late watching movies and eating popcorn just like I do. She was often heard saying little polish phrases like “ vi jeesh?” and the ever popular “ yezos cohani” And you would hear her humming, probably more than you’d ever hear her talking.

If I had to come up with one word to describe gma it would be GRACE.

She was the most graceful person I have ever known. She was always calm, quiet, and never lost her cool. Everything in her house was always “ just so.” Sometimes I would look at the towels in the hallway closet and wonder how on earth she could possibly fold and stack them so perfectly.
Even though everything in her house had its place, she never minded when we made a mess. I never once heard her complain. She just did what needed to be done and cleaned up, humming along the way.
Gma told me she never had much. Never had a bike, never had roller skates, and never learned to drive a car. But to her, none of that mattered. She was perfectly content. And that, to me, was what made her so special. She told me her favorite thing in this life was dancing with grandpa at the Eagle’s Ballroom downtown.

And although I wanted her to stay here with me forever, I know she is happier now. And I am so happy for her because I know she is walking, running and (if my prayers were answered), dancing again with grandpa in a ballroom up above.
