I too knew her from the Herald-Tribune World Youth Forum–a roller coaster ride taking in politics, religion, art, concerts, economics and people through what were in that summer of 1964 called the Common Market countries. Some of us were somber, some bookish, some unavailing of laughter, then there were Nancy and Maria Scatuccio who extracted from our journey lyrics of their own to familiar melodies. They were so much fun to be around and lightened the loads of adolescent confusion and the perhaps inevitable homesickness of new graduates from high school who had never traveled so far before. Lucky for me I have seen them and a couple of others in the times since–Nancy most recently when she visited Chicago possibly not long before the virus was upon us. She was as hearty and funny as in the old days, and smart as they come. You could learn a lot from her in the time it took to sip a glass of chianti. Don’t waste a minute. Look up old friends and rejoice in the knowing of them.
